Vietnam Overview
Vietnam, a country made famous by war, has a unique and rich civilization, spectacular scenery and friendly people.
Vietnam War
The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, or the Vietnam Conflict, occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia from 1959 to April 30, 1975. The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and South Vietnam, supported by the United States and others.
Vietnam Arts
Vietnam has a long tradition of classical literature and poetry. The Tale of Kieu is Vietnam's national epic poem.
Colonial time
Not all Vietnamese resisted the French conquest, and some even welcomed it. The monarchy, through decades of repression, had lost the support of the people; and Tu Duc, in the eyes of large segments of the peasantry, had lost his mandate to rule.
Vietnamese Culture
Four great philosophies and religions have shaped the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people: Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Christianity.
Vietnamese People
The ethnic Vietnamese are concentrated largely in the alluvial deltas and in the coastal plains, having little in common with the minority peoples of the highlands, whom they historically have regarded as hostile and barbaric.
Vietnam Geography
Vietnam is shaped in a long "S" stretching for 1000 miles from China in the north to the Gulf of Thailand in the south. The country's land area including water is about 127,000 square miles which makes it slightly larger than Italy or a bit smaller than Japan.
History of Vietnam
For many years, Vietnam formed part of the French colony of Indochina, along with Cambodia and Laos. With Vichy French agreement, in 1941, the Japanese occupied Vietnam during their World War II sweep through South-East Asia.
Religion
In Vietnam, little is what it appears to be on the surface. The country’s religion is an excellent example. Ostensibly, Vietnam is a Buddhist country – around 80% of the population regard themselves as adherents.
