Dalat

Dalat, capital of Lam Dong Province, is located approximately 308km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. At an elevation of 1,500 m, Dalat bears the look of an Old French city. It was founded in 1897 when Doctor Alexandre Yersin recommended that the area be developed as a resort town. With its green, rolling hills, misty lakes and fragrant pine forests, Dalat is Vietnam's most romantic destination. Set at an elevation of 1,475 meters, surrounded by forests, coffee plantations and gardens, Dalat, is often called the "City of Eternal Spring". A trip to Dalat is not complete until one goes to the Dalat Flower Gardens. While the surrounding lowlands bake in summer heat, Dalat's temperatures hover between a cool 15 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Dalat is also a top resort destination for Vietnamese couples getting married or honeymooning. If the lunar astrological signs are particularly good, it's not unusual to see 10 or so wedding parties in a single day. There are also some picturesque temples and hillsides lined with the crumbling weekend homes of French colonials.

 Places of interest

 Valley of Love

The beauty of the valley has become more poetic and seductive for travelers and lovers. About 5 km from Dalat's centre to the North, the Valley of Love is ringed by hilly slopes covered with pines. Under King Bao Dai, the valley was called Hoa Binh (Peace). In 1972, Da Thien Lake was crated in the valley and thanks to this enhancement, has attracted countless visitors and, of course, lovers.Visitors can hire a boat to appreciate the lake or riding horse rented by cowboy-dressed guide along paths around the area.

 Dalat Cathedral

A French Romanesque-style cathedral set in the middle of Vietnam's central highlands. With its distinctive red brick, stained glass windows, and soaring 47-metre high spire, Dalat Cathedral is the city's most distinctive landmark

 Morning Market

Dalat's temperate climate makes it ideal for vegetable and flower cultivation. The morning market is the perfect place to view some of the exotic species of orchids, fruits and vegetables grown in the region. Ethnic minorities from the surrounding villages also attend the market to sell handicrafts and textiles.

 Xuan Huong lake

This man-made lake dominates the town – Dalat is built on the slopes rising from its shores. Although you can take a paddle boat on its calm waters, the best way to see it is to stroll along the 7km sealed path that encircles it.

 Dalat Flower Gardens

Dalat is known all over Vietnam for its flowers. Set next to Xuan Huong Lake, the Dalat Flower Gardens were established in 1966 by the Vietnamese government, and are refined continually. Among the tastefully arranged flora are orchids, hydrangeas, fuchsias, and ferns. Plants and flowers are also for sale, including special fern fibers used to stop bleeding in traditional oriental medicine. Across the road from the Flower Gardens are nurseries with various types of bonsai trees, artfully laid out around the lake.

 Lake of sighs

This lake has such romantic connotations for the Vietnamese that you would think it was created by a fairy godmother rather than French dam work. Legend has it that a 15-year-old girl named Thuy drowned herself after her boyfriend of the same age, Tam, fell in love with another. Her gravestone still exists on the side of the lake, marked with the incense and flowers left by other similarly heartbroken souls, even though the name on the headstone reads "Thao," not "Thuy." The place is crammed with honeymooners in paddle boats and motorboats.

 Prenn Waterfall

This 10 meter high waterfall roars through the forest 13 km south of Dalat. Bridges near the falls allow for close up views and the chance to feel the mist spraying up from the falls. It’s even possible to walk underneath them.

Gougah Fall

About 40 km away from Dalat, this waterfall has naturally separated water ways at the center of the fall.

Bao Dai's Summer Villa

Built in 1933, the 25-room villa was Emperor Bao Dai’s midsummer retreat. The art-deco interior still looks much as it did early in the 1930s.

Truc Lam Buddhist Monastery

This tranquil and newly-built monastery is located in a forest above serene Tuyen Lam Lake. The monastery has a landscaped garden and small museum of Buddhist artifacts.

Linh Phuoc Pagoda

It is a very contemporary pagoda housing a statue of Buddha made of gold and also has a very fascinating garden around it.

Lat Village

This is the village of the Co Ho people, with a huge cement sculpture of a chicken at its centre.

Chicken village

Famous for its giant concrete chicken caught mid-strut in the village centre. Lang Dinh An has become very popular with travellers because it's conveniently situated on the highway, 17km from Dalat. The village is home to about 600 people of the Koho minority, who were enticed down from the hills

Lang Bian Mountain

Also called Lam Vien Mountain, it has five volcanic peaks ranging in altitude from 2100m to 2400m. Of the two highest peaks, the eastern one is known by the woman's name K'Lang while the western one bears as man's name, K'Biang.
